ALL-AROUNDER
BICYCLES
There are many ways to build great bicycles for all-arounder
style riding. One of the keys is, of course, tire clearance as
well as the fittings that permit fenders, racks (custom or
pre-fitted), and other details. A Goodrich all-arounder is
usually built with three basic concepts. First, as frame and
fork that emphasizes versatility in parts selection, meaning
that any number of parts can be fitted or exchanged. Rivendell
is an excellent example of this style of building, especially
their Toyo-built Japanese models such as the Atlantis and
Saluki. Second, the frame and fork can be matched to certain
already-available bits such as Nitto (or other maker) handlebar
racks. I will take the existing part and prepare a mount
fitting just for your bike. Last, you may opt for custom racks,
front or rear. I build these from stainless steel tubing with
all custom sizes for a perfect fit.
Any number of details are possible on an
all-arounder, including different brake choices and options.
When ordering I will be happy to review a long list of options
for your consideration. Nearly any sort of braze-on or option
is possible though it is important to create a sense of balance,
symmetry, and beauty in the overall design. There is never any
reason to sacrifice the pleasing aesthetics of a bicycle for
function. In fact, the most functional and best performing
bicycles are always beautiful.
A note about stems and steerer tubes: I
will be happy to build either threaded or threadless steerer
tubes. You may opt for a pre-made stem or I can make a custom
in either design. The price of custom reflects the time and
details you request but one of the advantages of this is to
fine-tune the fit. Stems and steerers effect overall stack
height and therefore important considerations such as bar to
saddle drop (that is, the amount of difference between saddle
height and handlebars). We can make either method work
perfectly and to suit your tastes.
Tubing for the all-arounder is made with
due consideration of the purpose of the bike and the rider’s
needs. I am happy to discuss this and all other details, just
give me a call.
